Session Abstract

The 2005 traveling exhibition Light Motifs: American Impressionist Paintings from The Metropolitan Museum of Art presented a perfect opportunity for art museums and schools to collaborate using Internet2 technology. As venues for this important, yet unfamiliar exhibition, the University of Alaska Museum of the North in Fairbanks and the University of Alaska Museum in Anchorage desired assistance from The Metropolitan in educating the Alaskan educators about American Impressionism:an uncommon subject in Alaskan collections. IMLS grant funding for this exhibition did not anticipate education staff travel but The School at Columbia University and the Alaska Teleconference Network donated the platform and connectivity necessary to support videoconferencing. The collaboration's high point was the Internet2-facilitated interaction among Alaskan staff and teachers (especially Fairbanks School District elementary art teachers at the Art Center training program), and Metropolitan educators and curators. This distance-learning experience stimulated the Alaskan docents and teachers to improve their education work overall and became a significant life-long learning experience. This session features on site presenters from the faculty of University of Alaska Anchorage and the Metropolitan Museum, videoconference documentation, and representatives from UA Museum of the North in Fairbanks and The School of Columbia via Internet2
