Session Abstract

Each Saturday in the fall, the NCAA member schools pair off to play football. Immediately following these contests, each school exchanges game video with the next week's opponent. Video is used extensively in coaching and is essential to modern university sports programs. Coaches expect opponent's video available for review on Sunday. Previously, exchanges have involved physical media sent via courier services. Last season, Pac-10 schools began using electronic exchange; made feasible by the Internet2's vast available bandwidth. We learned a good deal about exchanging 20Gbyte video files in a time-constrained production environment. We learned about the varying degrees of connectivity that exist between Athletics departments, what and where the bottlenecks are, and what is truly involved in realizing high-speed file transfers between groups ultimately more interested in coaching sports than in the details of network tuning. The presentation will cover lessons learned, how others might build on our experience, and how, as it should, appropriate use of technology can enhance quality of life. Technical details regarding hardware, software, and tuning needed to accomplish routine high-volume data transfer will be discussed.
