Session Abstract

SURA has undertaken a coordinated program targeted at the development of a regional grid infrastructure, SURAgrid (http://www.sura.org/programs/sura_grid.html). SURAgrid is evolving into a generalized, regional education and research infrastructure (a key differentiator of SURAgrid from other grids) that is positioned to become an essential tool for scientific progress. To meet the diverse needs of the SURAgrid user community, SURAgrid will integrate access to locally contributed resources, project-specific environments, highly specialized or HPC resources, and gateways to national and international cyberinfrastructure. With support from the National Science Foundation (OCI-054555), SURAgrid is also focusing on application deployment, in two key areas: * Identifying the needs of users and applications that may be met by access to grid computing. * Establishing a representative application set to utilize and demonstrate SURAgrid's current functionality and help direct and catalyze future design and development. This effort is helping to create a broad awareness of the benefits of grid computing among potential SURAgrid users while assisting current users in porting their applications to a working grid environment. In this presentation, SURA will share what it has learned about grid application discovery and deployment, highlighting applications that illustrate the diversity of the application set.
