Bridging Asia and the U.S.: Distance Learning using Advanced Networks

Time 12/06/06 01:15PM-02:30PM

Session Abstract

The implementation of the Internet2 Network had led to the development of the distant learning system on an international level in Thailand, where King Mongkut?s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang had organized the Distant Training Program among institutes from three participating countries on different continents at the same time: this comprises of Tokai University, Japan, Ball State University, USA, and KMITL, Bangkok. This event, which took place in the past month of June with the duration of 20 hours, features the training via the internet-based videoconference system, where the content of the lecture is in e-learning format. The Distant Teleconference had achieved much success, with 64 participants having received the certificates, all of which are students of Tokai and KMITL. For the network linkage, KMITL has established network connection with the Inter-University Network (UniNet) that connects to the Internet2 allowing KMITL to secure a bridge connection with Ball State University and Tokai University. The content of the lecture features the subject on culture titled ?Thai-Japanese Culture on Architecture and Environment? where after attending the lecture in the distant training classes, students were able to learn the content of the lecture in e-learning format from http://www.thaicyberu.go.th This year 2007, KMITL will host the International Symposium on Architecture in the Land of Suvarnabhumi, which will implement the Internet2 network for the international conference with the aim to reduce traveling cost among participants. As for the Distant Learning among the three institutes in three countries, the objective is to expand the learning network to the classrooms located in Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago that we have already tested connection in the Asian region. Currently we are in the process of contacting the educational institute in Hanoi, which is expected to achieve near success.
