Lightning Talks - Anomalous Traffic from Internet Consumer Products

Time 07/19/06 11:45AM-11:50AM

Session Abstract

I'd like to present a quick report on our analysis based on a multi-year, continuing measurement study begun in response to a particularly network abuse incident. We found that one IP address of our public Network Time Protocol server was the destination of a continuous large scale flood of inbound traffic from hundreds of thousands of real Internet hosts throughout the world; this being due to a flaw in the design of low-cost Internet products targeted for residential use.

Amongst the analysis results is the exposure of the half-life of typical low-cost routers targeted for residential use.
