GMPLS Tutorial and R&E Network Implementation

Session Abstract

Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) has been recently gaining more attention as advanced networks look for ways to manage hybrid telecommunications capabilites. This tutorial will provide background on the GMPLS protocols -- RSVP-TE, OSPF-TE, and LMP -- their history and how they work. We will also look at how these protocols have been deployed within the Research and Education networks as the community explores provisioning dynamic light path services. We will look at open source implementations of GMPLS-OSPF-TE and GMPLS-RSVP-TE as part of the DRAGON Software Suite, the interdomain routing agent called the NARB, how the control plane architecture has been constructed within DRAGON and HOPI, and additional issues of book-ahead scheduling, authorization, common services, and multi-region routing. We will also discuss how regional and campus R&E networks can deploy such networks and how they can be interconnected and collaborate with national GMPLS facilities such as HOPI.
