Thinking About Lambda Based Network Architectures and Your Applications

Time 09/20/05 08:45AM-10:00AM

Session Abstract

With Internet2 and National Lambda Rail actively working to merge, there is increased interest in how lambda-based network facilities might be effectively used for advanced
applications. That new interest raises a number of pragmatic questions, including:

1) What are the advantages and disadvantages of lambda-based
network architectures?

2) Can we identify applications that are particularly well-suited to lambda-based architectures?

3) How will lambda-based connectivity interact with typical campus local area networks, and with traditional wide area R&E networks such as Internet2?
4) How should applications deal with the decrease in network
availability potentially associated with the use of unprotected lambdas?

5) Will lambda-based architectures scale, or will widespread interest in lambda-based architectures prove to be hard to scalably and economically accomodate?

6) What are the security implications of moving applications to a lambda-based architecture?

Time will be reserved at the end of the talk for audience questions.
