AANTS: Web-Based Tools for Cooperative Campus Network Administration

Time 09/20/05 04:30PM-05:30PM

Session Abstract

The Authorized Agent Network Tool Suite (AANTS) is a web-based network administration system. AANTS was developed to pervasively monitor and hierarchically manage the University of Wisconsin-Madison's next-generation campus network from campus border to the jack.

The scale of our new network suggests that management tasks at the edge of the network be cooperatively delegated to hundreds of "customer" IT department staff. AANTS enables both internal network engineers and the IT staff of academic departments to manage gear, change device configurations, upgrade device code, troubleshoot local area networks, inspect traffic data, coordinate with users, and perform various other day-to-day functions from a standard web browser.

This talk will provide an overview of the foundation information systems and business practices we've chosen to employ, atop which the AANTS tools are then used in the deployment and operation of our campus network. We will also demonstrate the capabilities of selected AANTS tools. We hope to illustrate the expansive scope of management systems in a large, modern network and demonstrate examples of effective tools we have developed in-house to make network management less esoteric and more convenient to our end users.
