Radiology and Internet2: A Global Collaboration Case Study

Time 04/20/04 03:00PM-04:00PM

Session Abstract

Discussion of a case study of a global collaboration effort (Corporate, University, Government, International) taking advantage of the Internet2 connectivity during the Radiological Society of North America's annual meeting in Chicago. A session discussing complex clinical cases involving high resolution imagery was simultaneously multicast live in 2 formats: MPEG2 streaming and a compressed HD format reproducing diagnose-quality images. The HD format was received live in several sites in the US, Spain and Japan, and is now available for educational purposes on-demand archived with an advanced speech indexation tool. The complexities of generating an HD format from the different sources (DICOM medical, DV video, etc.) and HD compression will be reviewed.

Additionally, the NLM, Internet2 and several University members demonstrated advanced medical applications involving immersive 3D and stereoscopic visualization and Access Grid usage. The tutorials involved simultaneous use of 3 screens, one of them with stereoscopic projection, and are now being built into an HD format online tool for universal educational access.
