Federations and InCommon

Time 04/20/04 01:15PM-02:30PM

Session Abstract

As federations begin to emerge, there is increased evidence of the need for unifying federating software pieces and supporting documents. This session will discuss various federations being established both here adn in other countries and how the various documents required as underpinning for these federations help determine how trust works. The activities underway to establish a U.S. higher-education federation, InCommon, will be described. A set of documents to support InCommon is being developed under the auspices of its newly established Executive Committee. The role of the Committee will be presented and the potential role of the documents in bridging federations is described through examples such as the use of the federal e-authentication guidelines in developing authentication guidelines for InCommon.
