Taking Advantage of International Connectivity: Global Collaborations

Session Abstract

This session will highlight exemplary collaborations between Internet2
members and affiliates and international partners that are taking advantage
of international connectivity to support research and education. In the
format of two case studies, the primary goals of this session will aim at:

* highlighting the value of international connectivity and
international partnerships to the Internet2 community
* highlighting what members and affiliiates of the Internet2 community
are doing with International partners and providing a forum to share
projects and lessons learned.

Presentations will include:

"NSF and International Cyber-infrastructure" -- a presentation on
international directions and programs from the U.S. National Science
Foundation, with a focus on programs, projects and funding opportunities
from NSF's office of International Science and Engineering

"HAVNET Project and International Collaborations" -- The HAVNET project,
based at Stanford University, is a collaborative effort to develop advanced
networking infrastructure for distributed learning. This presentation will
build from the trans-Pacific demo presented at the meeting
(http://events.internet2.edu/2004/fall-mm/demos.html#virtualsurgery) where
a surgical instructor, located remotely in Canberra, Australia, will be
teaching a surgical trainee or student, located at the Internet2 Member
Meeting, about a particular surgical procedure. We will cover international
aspects of this project, long with opportunities and challenges, as well as
other international programs and projects in Sweden, Australia, India,
South East Asia and Africa.
