Not Your Standard GigaPoP: Middle of the Country Regional Optical Networks--Part 2

Time 09/29/04 10:30AM-11:45AM

Session Abstract

The world of optical networking is rapidly evolving on national, regional and metropolitan fronts to meet research and educational needs. Increasingly, as the pent-up demands of E-Science and peer-to-peer applications extend the campus network outward, universities and related organizations are choosing to own rather than lease lit fiber infrastructure. These panel sessions will describe leading optical initiatives on all three fronts in the middle of the country. In Texas, seven public entities banded together in the early 1990s to build a 350-mile fiber network serving 427 member locations in the Austin metro area (GAATN). The second chapter of this story is now being written as 31 institutions join forces to develop a new fiber-based network (LEARN) to serve state higher education. In the Upper Midwest, a number of regional optical initiatives are focused on Chicago, where 11 members of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) have agreed to purchase 76 strands of fiber connecting them to Starlight and the major Chicago-area transit and peering facilities. The Upper Midwest story also has a transcontinental dimension through the Northern Tier initiative and planned cross-border connections into Canada. The leaders of these モmiddle of the countryヤ RONs will describe the evolution of their projects, the network architecture choices that are being made, and the ownership, operation, and governance issues that are raised in the transition from leased circuits. There will be no formal session break between the two panels. A joint Q&A will follow the panel presentations.
