Advanced Applications: Internet2 SIP.edu Initiative

Time 10/14/03 01:15PM-02:30PM

Session Abstract

The Internet2 SIP.edu initiative seeks to promote the convergence of voice and email identities, grow SIP-reachability within Internet2, and encourage experimentation with new enterprise SIP services. The initial phase of SIP.edu calls for each participating university to
leverage its campus Person directory and existing phone system to provide inbound SIP voice reachability to all its users. Participants are also expected to begin limited trials supporting registered SIP endpoints. Several universities have deployed this architecture, providing SIP connectivity to tens of thousands of Internet2 users. A number of other schools have deployments in progress and Cisco has pledged significant support. This session will include an overview of underlying motivations, a walk through of the generic architecture,
and several deployment experience reports.
