Network Engineering: IPv6 by 2006: The Case for IPv6 Deployment Throughout the Internet2 Community by 2006

Time 10/15/03 04:30PM-05:30PM

This livestream has concluded. The archive video will be posted here. Archives can take up to two weeks to be posted.

Session Abstract

What would it mean to say that the Internet2 community has set the goal of being IPv6-compliant by 2006 throughout campus, regional, and national networking infrastructures? Why should we set such a goal? And what measures would need to be taken to achieve it? The case for IPv6 deployment throughout the Internet2 community goes well beyond the usual emphasis on the need for expanded IP address space. This session will discuss the business and technology improvements and benefits from IPv6 deployment for Internet2 campus, gigaPoP, and national infrastructures. Topics include:
- The Internet EcoSystem
- Why IPv6 deployment will bring business and operational benefits to Internet2 campus, regional, and national network-centric operations, permitting new uses of pervasive distributed computing
- Transitioning to IPv6--coexistence with legacy IPv4 systems, network security considerations, and other points of transition
- An update on the Moonv6 Pilot (www.moonv6.org), a collaborative IPv6 interoperability and application demonstration project of the North American IPv6 Task Force, the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Lab, the Joint Interoperability Testing Command, Internet2, and others. The pilot will be taking place across the US at multiple locations during the Member Meeting
- A prediction for IPv6 in 2004.
