Network Engineering: Performance Engineering: E2EpiPEs and FastTCP

Session Abstract

Eric Boyd will give an update on the progress Internet2 has made in creating and deploying the piPEs architecture. The first main component of that architecture is the Abilene Measurement Infrastructure (AMI). AMI implements regularly scheduled network measurements between all of the Abilene measurement nodes. Initial results of one-way latency (OWAMP) measurements between Abilene measurement nodes were shown at the spring meeting. Enhancements to the web interface for displaying this data will be presented. Also progress toward regular and on-demand Iperf tests will be discussed.

In the second half, we describe the recent experiments that broke the Internet2 Land Speed Records and their implications. New experiments performed during the same week at the Telecom World 2003 Conference in Geneva will also be presented via VRVS. We explain the architecture, implementation strategy, and algorithms in FAST TCP, and compare its performance with current TCP and its high-speed variants such as HSTCP and Scalable TCP. We will describe the design of a FAST testbed on Abilene and present preliminary experimental results.
