Advanced Applications: Objective Networks (sm): Component Objects As an Advanced Content Form for Internet2

Time 10/14/03 03:00PM-04:00PM

Session Abstract

The Internet has emerged as the best communications platform for Environmental Designers. Architects, Planners, Landscape Architects, Engineers, Geographers, and Construction Managers were early OK adopters of the Internet as a convenient way to share large-format drawings among distributed collaborators. However, it soon became evident that design communication at deeper object or component levels was possible, allowing design professionals to conceivably share detailed 3D project models or even time-based simulations (4D) in addition to traditional 2D design documents. Component objects are "virtual" objects that can be used in a large variety of CAD and GIS environments. They store 3D information (geometry, appearance, surface, material, quantity, construction, etc.), 2D information (plan representation, labels, etc.) and property information (e.g., serial numbers, price, dealer information, urls, etc.) in a single content form, and describe real design and building components like doors, windows, walls, and roofs, etc. Component technologies have been the subject of ongoing research, and are now emerging in professional practice. This presentation will provide an overview of component technologies, present case studies, and discuss how high bandwidth environments like Internet2 are likely to increase component object fidelity, availability, and integration (e.g., CAD and GIS objects). Conversely, the impact of component objects as a potentially significant new content and object-form for Internet2 will also be considered. The Objective Networks (sm) Internet2 collaboratory and component repository will also be presented, along with their related objectives for the teaching and practice of environmental design disciplines.
