Session Abstract

This session will provide an overview of Virginia Tech’s new self-service account generation process. To the end user, our pidGen (Personal IDentifier Generation) service appears to function much like the sign-up processes for many popular portals and free web services such as Yahoo and Hotmail. Behind the scenes, it takes a considerable amount of time for technical and functional staff to determine reliable attributes and data sources for initial end-user authentication. It also requires software tools that enable staff to manage role-specific authentication requirements, and allow end-users to request IDs. We will talk about the history of the project, the requirements for the software we developed, demonstrate the mdsAuth (Multiple DataSource Authentication) and pidGen tools, and talk about our experiences supporting this service.
