Session Abstract

The NSF’s CC-NIE program has directed millions of dollars toward campuses for the construction of high capacity, highly optimized research networks to support the emerging era of data-intensive science. Capacity upgrades are providing the bandwidth needed for the exponential data growth resulting from experimental and computing facilities. Innovations such as the Science DMZ design and Software Defined Networking techniques are removing network performance barriers to allow scientists to share their large data sets to collaborators around the world with ease.

While these upgrades are a giant step forward for our nation’s cyberinfrastructure – they are only the first step in making the CC-NIE investments valuable and broadly useful. “Human networking” i.e. directly engaging with the end user community is essential to the broad adoption of these new network facilities. Many science collaborations—from climate research to life sciences to materials science—still use hard drives to share and ship their data. The R&E community must come together to develop effective strategies for on boarding and serving these scientists.

This panel will highlight steps taken by campuses and research networks that have received funding, and are actively engaged with their campus researchers to improve their productivity and their scientific workflows.
