Session Abstract

Cost effective infrastructure for Internet2 communities require networks that can automate cloud network provisioning and commissioning while dynamically responding to changes in workload, traffic patterns or natural disasters like Sandy. This enables more cost effective service offerings to Internet2 communities through network virtualization. This discussion describes the results of a Software-Defined Network (SDN) testbed at Marist College which combines data center switching and long distance optical networking between three simulated data centers under a common SDN network controller. We demonstrate rapid provisioning and dynamic wavelength assignment in response to changes within application requirements, with no operator intervention.. This provides cost effective resource pooling within and between data centers. In the event of a natural disaster such as a hurricane, it would be beneficial if the inter-site network could quickly be reconfigured to facilitate transferring all mission critical data and applications outside the affected region.
